MUSIC is one of those art forms which act as an accurate mirror of social and cultural structures. If the society or the culture of a certain area is falling in to decline, the music of that place will reflect it. Similarly, when the society or the culture is developing well, the music will also flourish. Hence, music has a major function in the tracing the history of a country. Modern music owes much to the Ancient Greeks. In fact, the word "music" is originated from the 9 Ancient Greek muses - goddesses controlling the arts and sciences. Modern day musicians refer to their muse, which is somebody who influences another person's creative work. A great many musical terms originated from Greek. Yet, when Ancient Greece went into decline and the Byzantine and Roman Empires collapsed, Greek music stopped developing for several centuries until it was revived in the 19th century. Greeks are said to have considered music a way of exalting the glory of god. Music was also part of their social life. It was played on all forms of social occasions. Because drama was also quite popular in Greece, music was used when drama was staged. Greek music is usually said to have lacked harmony. It was mainly sung by one vocalist and not by a chorus as is ordinarily displayed in Greek plays. Ancient musicians strictly followed the laws of music and didn't mix one form with another. The rules were so stringent that the viewers or listeners were not permitted to clap. The purpose of musical shows was not to entertain but to teach common people. Pythagoras suggested the use of numbers to mark musical scales. This concept was introduced to Ancient Greek Music. Hence, Pythagoras became the father of music theory. Most musical works, as reported, was monophonic. Therefore, they were rather similar. But when musicians began experimenting, some Ancient Greek experts like Plato called it sacrilege of the purest form of music. Today Greek music is made up of folk music and Eastern and Western tendencies. |
